Willie, I sympathize. I have trained with people for yeats who were taking various legal (and maybe illegal) supplements that were pro-hormones, and I didn't ever want to see them get busted or have their results thrown out of a meet or give them any grief over it.
The fact of the matter is, in a sport as backwoods and insulated as powerlifting, I can't see any good sense in asking for that kind of trouble, either health wise (if you believe it is bad for you) or money wise (since the good stuff isn't cheap) and especially legally. Any over the age of 25 who still wants to mess around with a potential criminal disaster is out of their dang mind. That's why I mention police and fire and military. In my job they test sometimes, and who's to ever say they haven't improved the test?
You are right that I was coming off a little holier than thou, and yes I can be a big cheater and a liar just like anybody else .
My view of powerlifting is from the bottom though. I lift out of DC. This mid-Atlantic territory is very small for the sport. My last meet was in a Moose Lodge, and I am barely a decent bencher even. But I love to lift, and I would like to compete at just one competition where I felt like the whole field was clean.
best luck to you in lifting,
-dan
