New poster here, I've scanned some of the threads and see that politics, global warming (or not) plus passionate defenses by the godophiles are instigated from time to time. These are the burning issues, without qstn, and come about by we higher-order mammals as to questions around our existence and the future in which our progeny will live.
About me, an over-the-hill powerlifter that still follows the sport; living in that mecca for evangelical christians, Colo Springs. I'm a day-trader, college educated, divorced father with two teenagers, a bush-hater, and an open atheist--tho I resist being defined by what i don't believe in, since that implies there is a god not to believe in, but that's ok, the subtleties can be explained if need be.
Religion can only be explained (to me) as emotional reasoning. One feels strongly about something, so it becomes reality. It is an emotional need that is met. Religion fills the need of those that feel marginalized, unable to make sense of the inequities and cruelty that are part of society. It becomes "God's Will," which takes care of that sense of futility, that need for accountability.
We all practice emotional reasoning. Some can be used to enhance performance, from athletics to academic achievement, our personal interactions and even a way of life that excludes a god figure that keeps track of good and bad--consider the tenets of Buddhism as an example.
Here's a study done years ago as to certain chemicals in people's brains, which imply a predisposition to irrational belief without proof.
