In Response To: I'm a libertarian and despise liberals (Scott Slaterly)

Scott,

An education in statistics can be a very powerful thing and very useful when combined with knowledge in additional areas. It can, however, be useless if details are overlooked. In this case, as Doug P points out, we need to look more closely at the methods used to obtain the original data upon which the statistical analysis is performed. I once had a statistician tell me he proved that lifting belts do not help prevent injury when lifting heavy objects - the data "proved" this because the incidence of injury was not statistically significantly different for sample populations who wore a belt and who did not wear a belt! Despite diligent statistical analysis, he proved nothing of the kind and would have realized this if he'd known a little about powerlifting and the proper method of breathing and utilizing the stomach muscles. Or to paraphrase your post "take a chemistry class and get back to me!"
