the rule was that if there was any contact with the upright such was a disqualification. Shortly after MacDonald's 608.87# bench being called for this, there was a rule change that is the same as you described....as long as the contact did not "aid" the performance of the lift (ie, "sliding the bar up the rack") and as long as it did not result in a downward movement of the bar, the lift was considered "good". As per Gordon Santee, who along with Bill Enis, competed in the meet, MacDonald's 608.87# bench lift would have passed under the rule change. In fact, if you look closely at the Sept 1981 Powerlifting USA cover, on which a photo of MacDonald's 608 appeared, you can see that the only reason Mike even hit the upright was because the lip of the upright jutted out a little bit and he nudged the lip rather than the upright itself having admittedly set up a little too close to the uprights. In those days, foot movement, head movement, and even not being flat footed were all reasons for disqualification. Pacifico also lost at least one world record lift in the bench for hitting the upright...I think a 540# lift as a 198#er. Given that the rule change occurred so soon after MacDonald's lift, Mike always mentions the 608# bench as his best competitive PR or highest unofficial bench record (excluding this lift he only has 35 bench WRs, not 36). I think Kaz, Mike Bridges, Mike Lambert (who took the Powerlifting USA cover photo), Marv Phillips, Larry Kidney, and Tom Overholtzer were all present. Hughes, Mucci, and Haley were all judging.
