In Response To: Ryan Celli video from USPF American Cup *LINK* *PIC* (Courtney Stanley)

First of all, congratulations to Ryan on his record setting bench press! Clearly you are one heck of a bench presser, both RAW and equipped, as you have proven several times...and a great all around lifter as well. I was at one of the NERB events and I believe you were there as well. Certainly I have seen some incredible meet and training video of your accomplishments. Great luck in the future and congrats again.
I was curious as to what people thought on the following. Unlike the "old days", today we have a lot of "video evidence" of most lifting events...for better or for worse. Such has the advantage of creating a treasure chest of memorabilia of the lifting legends of the recent past, present, and future....and, as well, leaves the door open for "critiquing" performances, even when one wasn't present to actually witness the event....again, for better or for worse.
Many of the great lifts of yesterday's legends of the game were never recorded to film or video, and we are left only with eye witness accounts and meet write ups. It's therefore always nice to hear from "those who were there to bare witness". If I recall, Mr. Fernando was at the meet at which Mike MacDonald did his record 562# bench as a 198#er in 1980 and certainly Mr. Anello and Crain saw many of MacDonald's lifts. The only film of MacDonald that I believe exists is of the '75 Seniors at which Mike had a less than great day, only hitting his opener of 545# as a 220#er, twice missing attempts at 578#. From most accounts, I have heard that MacDonald was pretty strict and always in accordance with the rules as far as technique went (his typical form can be seen in the ’75 Seniors video)...pretty much flat backed with a wide grip (the full 32”), arms out at almost a full 90 degrees from the torso. From what I have heard described, he could just about push anything off his chest and then grind it out to lockout. I recall Brian Huydema telling me that he was at the meet at which MacDonald did his 603# bench record as a 240#er and the lift was amazing...Mike's arms kind of shook as he began the descent, but after he came to a full pause at the chest the weight seemed to just blast right up off his chest almost laughably, then was ground out to a complete lockout. Gordon Santee described Mike's 608# bench at the Body Expo II meet as also being very strict, despite the technical infraction of hitting the upright just before complete lockout. Obviously for most lifts in the past, we are stuck with only eye witness accounts and what was written. We must trust that the judging was always correct and that white lights were awarded accordingly. Certainly it is a lot tougher on today's lifter with respect to criticism.
