Hey Tommy!....
At the Worlds we only had to remove the Bar from the "swing hooks" on our OWN power. The swing arm was then manipulated by the spotter out of the way. For me ... I set up with feet a little close to clear the hooks then slid them out a little as I am fairly wide on my stance. But this was only because I am not used to unracking the weight in a Monolift. Many lifters familiar with Monolifts, simply planted their feet and stood up to unrack without moving their feet.
The USPF, however, has not removed the following from it's rule book:
***2. After removing the bar from the racks, the lifter must move backwards to
establish his position. The lifter shall wait in this position for the Chief Referee’s
signal. The signal shall be given as soon as the lifter is motionless and the bar
properly positioned. The Chief Referee’s signal shall consist of a downward
movement of the arm and the audible command "squat".****While this comment appears to endorse a "Walkout", most knowledgeable lifters will recognize the ease by which this requirement can be satisfied....for example: " a lifter would unrack from the Hooks by standing completely erect and then move the feet a miniscule amount to the rear to establish his postion for the commencement of the squat. The referee will then be looking for any discreet movement to the rear...however small...and whether or not the lifter is locked out before issuing a "Squat" command. So again, no one is required to move extensively with the weight.
So...why even bother with this at all???....why not just unrack it like the WPF??? .. The answer to this question is a little more complicated and requires understanding of many traditionalists within the USPF who are extremely leery of the Monolift. When the Monolift was voted on succesfully at the National Meeting in Las Vegas this past year... some kind of walkout requirement was established to ease the transition and assuage those reluctant to change.
This years national meeting in Rhode Island will have language proposals to vote on which, if approved, may eliminate any such movement at all.
Why did the USPF even bother with the Monolift??....why didn't we stick to our guns and maintain traditional values??...The answer lies in the Membership of the USPF itself.....a ground swell of sentiment towards the Monolift gained enough momentum to have a proposal put on the voting ballot a the Mational Meeting. This motion passed, and so was implemented as a result of a vote in the majority.
One must also recognize that this vote was more of a clarification, than a ground breaking occurence. The Monolift had been used at several USPF Meets prior to this ruling. Clarification was sought and a judgement was rendered.
