In Response To: Duration of bench pause from 60s to present (Myles Kantor)

A great vid was posted a few weeks ago of the 77 IPF Worlds (Wide World of Sports footage I think). It graghically demonstrated that the pause then was no different than you see in most meets now. As a matter of fact, the great Doug Young's bench press in the vid would have probably been blasted by the internet judges of today as 'touch and go'. As soon as it was motionless (which was quick due to great control)he pushed it back up. Everything gets exaggerated with time. As they say legends grow with time...so do memories of pause times and squat depth. In 20 years the new guys will probably be saying that our benches were paused longer and our squats were butt to the floor. The truth is those guys competed just as we do; right on the edge of the worded rules. Nothing needs to be changed to be like 'the old guys'...we already are. Only the equipment has evolved; and that is the nature of sports over time.
