Gentlemen:
It was suggested to me to view this post and comment. It does seem that a few of you are interested in training aspects of bodybuilders. First off, let's get real here. Nobody ever built any mass by using 10-20 lbs. on the cable machine. I know 'cause I've been doing those weights for the last six years I've returned to training.... that was a bit of a joke...ha ha. Anyway, bodybuilding encompasses so much more than just lifting heavy and buying stock in the pharmaceutical industry. Shaping is a key aspect to training for a lot of people. The mind/muscle connection is key for the optimum stimulation of growth, Therefore, it behooves you to train with light weights for 15-25 reps on certain isolation movements. Bear in mind that the pump is key in bodybuilding. We really big guys have gotten large simply by handling heavy weights with excellent muscular contractions for higher reps. We don't see much mass gain in the 2-4 rep range because the blood flow just isn't there.
Now many bodybuilders and "powerbuilders" use 3-6 reps on their basic core movements like bench, squats and deadlift, but use higher reps on isolation movements. Further, most bodybuilders rotate a heavy and a "lighter" day to keep the mucle confused so it won't adapt as well. Lighter days use scrupulous form in very slow movements and count reps up to 20-25.
Last thought. Since I do training work for a number of notables as well as the dietary and "supplement" scheduling, I must say that a good number of bodybuilders out there use less gear than a number of powerlifters I work with. Obviously they use a greater variety, but the allegations I hear of mega loads of sauce are mostly incorrect. True there are the unfortunate few cases of misguided amateurs who are dosing heavily to try and hurry themselves along in the mass department, but they are more the exception than the rule. If we powerlifters could learn more from the bodybuilders very productive regimens, we would see even greater advances in the world of strength. Evidence is available.
