As an ex discus thrower myself this was truly the end of a legend a very sad day.
To win 4 golds 56 to 68, and against the odds, (In 60 he tore his rib cartlidges, and in 68 he was 4 metres behind the world leader) makes him not just the best competitor for discus but the best in any sport.

If you ask discus throwers who their favourite throwers are whatever the age Al will be included.

It will be Wilkins/Oerter, Riedel/Oerter or Alekna/Oerter, In a time where sportsman are put on pedestals for sometimes lack luster achievments Al Oerter was truly the greatest.
