The first time I saw Jon compete was in Denver somewhere around 1972. He was an explosive lifter but the impressive part to me was his balanced lifting. Jon didn't have the largest legs I have ever seen but sure knew his own leverages. When he squated he had a technique of making the bar "whip" at the bottom so he changed direction quicker than I have ever witnessed by anyone else. Really amazing since this was before supersuits. I tried that technique a few times (with light weights) but quickly gave it up when I about killed myself and three training partners. That style needed to stay "unique" to Jon.

I can't imagine doing the marathon training that Jon did but I also don't remember ever seeing him gassed at the end of a meet like the rest of us.

I was fortunate to compete against Jon a couple of times in 1978. Once in Hawaii where he "whupped" me on all three individual lifts and of course the total. At the nationals the same year, he had a hamstring injury and missed all three deadlifts.

I can't recall ever talking to anyone who trained with Jon, was trained by Jon, or ever saw Jon lift that weren't impressed by his strength and strength endurance. Pretty amazing!

I saw the great Marvin Allen's previous posts and I expect he can tell many stories of Jon's athletic prowess.
