Ron, of course in the realm of track & field, Jon's main claim to fame was his discus throwing prowess where he won a national title in 1969 defeating the great Jay Silvester and others at that meet. That was a great accomplishment for someone not all that tall as discus throwers go. In the NCAAs, Jon's highest finish was second place in the discus and he was an All-American.

You sure have his squat style down the way I remember it: He'd squat down and bend a bit over at the waist as he approached the bottom, then hunch his back a bit to turn the momentum back up and straighten out as he stood up. He was certainly "big on back involvement" in his preferred squatting style. Cole actually had only medium bone structure I think, certainly nowhere nearly as large in the torso as Doug Young who had the shoulder carriage of a bodybuilder, and Jon had sort of small knees and so forth. He was athletic-looking for sure, just in a compact way without the giant thighs of a big squatter, nor the giant torso frame of some of the big bench pressers of that day.

Cheers! Brad

P.S.

Cole was one in a long line of weightmen (shot, hammer and discus throwers) who won titles in both sports or were near the top. George Frenn for powerlifting and hammer, Gary Gubner for weightlifting and WR shot put, Jon Cole for powerlifting and discus throwing and very good quick lifts too, Ken Patera was national quality collegian shot putter and national weightlifting champ, Al Feuerbach WR shot put and national champ weightlifter, Sam Walker national weightlifting champ and HS shot record holder (first over 70'), Bruce Wilhelm was national quality shot putter and national champion weightlifter. Most recently, Garry Franks has set WRs in powerlifting. Garry was a NCAA shot put champion.
