405 in a tee shirt in Feb. 1992 as an exhibition at a meet Paul Barbee, Jr. held at the athletic club in corpus christi. He did the first few reps somewhat slowly and then like a piston action finished off like he was a machine pumping out work. lol..he apologized to the crowd that he was going to a strength contest in a few weeks in Orlando and didn't want to push himself too much. Earlier, my workout partner had spotted Anthony arriving and pointed him out to me. He had a small grocery bag he was carrying and my buddy wondered out loud what special items might be in that bag and as we all do in our own fashion, we kept track of his goings to be sure to scope out if Anthony has hit on something special that we need to know about...as I heard my buddy say "there goes our great ideas about nutrition down the drain," i looked over to see Anthony downing I guess about a half dozen Krispy Kreme donuts and a quart of milk.
Several years later, i watched as his friends put two bench shirts on Anthony and he labored to get 650 lbs close to his chest. At that meet, he benched i guess something over 725 lbs but i still maintain those 20 reps raw with 405 was a better human endeavor. And he was far from maxing out with that many reps.
I have so many good and great powerlifters that disagree with me but the gain with equipment is now at too high a percentage increase to measure athletic performance as an individual.
