My Selfish Solution

I trained in commercial gyms 1980 thru late 1994. I'm fortunate since November 1994 until present to have a commercially equipped gym in my back yard and outstanding workout partners handpicked through time with the same ultimate goals I have. No doubt on one hand it appears selfish to isolate all the top competitive powerlifters in town in a small private gym but it's the only way we can accomplish our personal and I'm sure somewhat selfish lifting goals. We do routinely give lifting, coaching, and judging clinics in the local high-schools. We also routinely judge up to 12 high-school meets each year (dating back to 1985)plus a number of open meets. Having read through the posts, bottom line for me is that my personal goals require an atmosphere of focus, but to give back to the sport we do it mostly through kids. To those of you who continue to be successful training at a commercial facility, I tip my hat. I just don't think I could meet expectations for my definition of lifting success in a commercial gym any more. It's not so much the environment as it is the people. Through time old guys like me just lose tolerance for interruptions unless they're such that something positive results, and that's rare. We have outstanding commercial facilities in my area and many folks participating in them are meeting their personal goals, just none of the goals seem to be at a highly competitive level. For me, good workout partners without interruption have priority over the equipment or factilities. I'm just blessed enough to have the best of all. Experiences as noted on this thread are what resulted in my having a private gym, and no bass boat or money otherwise. Yep, the right choice for me though.

Best to all. Interesting thread that most/all can relate to.
