You have to consider context and the source.

If a news anchor or some other people who is not supposed to act like a moron said it and appeared serious then it would be appropriate to object.

The whole point of the Imus show is that he is offensive. People listen to hear him say offensinve insensitive things. He advertises that he is offensive and insensitive. It makes no sense to get so surprised when he does just that.
