In Response To: College Powerlifting Scholarships? (Mark Fain)

Mark,

You will not find a single College or University across the United States that will offer any scholarship(s) for Collegiate Powerlifting. As Coach Magendie alluded to, this is due to the fact that the sport of "Competive Powerlifting" is not currently an NCAA sanctioned sport. So what "exactly" does this all mean to a HS Powerlifter? Basically, this means that because the NCAA doesn't recognize Powerlifting, schools have no financial ability to offer scholarships to outstanding HS Powerlifters as a means of recruiting athletes into their programs.

The best case scenario that I know of, as of now, are slight (however substantual) waviers of certain fees from certain Universities. I am currently unaware of any circumstances at other Colleges and Universities anywhere else (but to double-check me on that, contact Coach Magendie at LSU Powerlifting) but do know of the terms at my Current Position. As the Head Coach of the LA Tech Powerlifting "Iron Dawgs" I can tell you that under certain specific circumstances, incoming freshman can have their out-of-state tuition waived if certain pre-determined criterion are met. (While this may not sound like very much money... out-of-state tuition waviers usually result in a 50% reduction of total tuition cost) As previously mentioned, I am unaware of similar conditions exist at other Universities, however do know that at Louisiana Tech University this opportunity exists within my Program. Should you have further questions, I would advise that you contact me or the National Collegiate Chairman, John Magendie.

To Strength and Power,

Z. Cooper
