Matt,
As Meet Director for next year's Collegiate Nationals I'll try to address some of your concerns and suggestions:
1. Due to my contract with the Hotel I can't adjust the dates once the bid is in. There are not that many Hotels that can hold a 200 lifter meet with ample venue space. I know that you all would like meets on a Collegiate Campus and that is something to look at. From a Meet Director's perspective, the Hotel will charge you a fee for a venue based on the total number of room nights. (The venue space I've reserved at the Radisson in Baton Rouge goes for about $1500.00/day. However with 275 Room Nights my cost goes down to about $1000.00 for the weekend. I am therefore able to pay for up to 10 judges rooms for the weekend.) If the Meet is held on a Collegiate Campus the Meet Director must rent the space with no ability to "comp out" the cost of the venue each day. Somthing to consider when addressing this issue. Definitely doable but may require some creative sponsorship for the venue. Possibly a corporate sponsor (ie "The Nokia Sugar Bowl". etc.).
2. I can change the meet to a two platform event if you all want me to. I personally feel that a lifter has trained hard to showcase his/her talent and I will run up to 225 lifters on one platform over a three day period. It is easier to coach and the lifter is showcased. These are my feelings and this is your meet. If you all want two platforms we can do it. My Warm-up area is HUGE so this will not be an issue. Coaches and teams speak out.
3. Masters Nationals last year had 200 lifters and 425 room nights blocked. I had to book a spillover hotel 3 weeks out. This hotel was walking distance (across the parking lot). If everyone makes their reservations early enough I can negotiate a good rate at a spillover hotel if needed. The Radisson will allow me up to 500 room nights if needed. I just need to have a month's lead time to rework room blocks for this event as we fill. I call them on a weekly basis to check on room reservations.
4. Judging........USAPL is consistently strict. Close will usually not cut it. I've been on all three sides and still am (Lifter, Judge, and Meet Director). Without hurting anyone's feelings.......I do like to be judged by those who lift competitively or who have competed in the last 5 years.
I am very open to all suggestions and if they can be done I'll try to do it. Our team's motto is a "Meet put on by lifters, for lifters".

Meet Director- 2005 Collegiate NationalsWell, I was impressed by some of the lifters that attended the meet, and love the collegiate atmosphere. Congradulations to the Nicholls girls who deserve every bit of it, as well as thier great coaching staff. With that being said, some things do come to mind as to what could have made the meet better.
1) We need the meet more in the middle of the semester.
I know BSU lifters and myself found it very hard to leave the week before finals, which should not even be an issue. If we want more lifters, we should take that into consideration
2) We need to run way more platforms/and or/increse qualifying totals. Meets with more than 100 lifters or so should have 2 platforms. Their is no reason to be at a national meet for more than 6 hours a day in a 3 day meet. This just makes everyone sick of being their hungry and waiting to lift. Either run more platforms or increase qualifying totals. Sorry to the beginners, but thier is no reason for such low totals at a national meet, the bigger classes are the worst.
3) We need a facility that can hold way more lifters. My team called to make reservations 2 months in advance and couldnt get rooms at the meet site. Thier is no reason to have to stay off site to attend a meet.
4) The last thing bugging the hell out of me is the judging. Except for Mr. Billy Jack, all the judges were very inconsistant and had me agrivated to the point of no return. All of my lifters hit proper depth (breaking parallel but not 3-4 in deep), and were getting called on depth. The judges needed to take a look at the USAPL lifting rulebook and recalibrate thier brains. Nowhere in that book does it say that your a$$ has to touch your calfs.
Well enough of being a "Grinch"
Matt
