NGB Report, our motions

Posted By: Chairman Jon Magendie (ip68-227-141-18.br.br.cox.net )
Date: Thursday, July 8, 2004, @ 10:58 p.m.

Motion 1: "Teams/schools may enter more than the maximum allowed on the roster may do so. However, lifters not on the roster will not be awarded or take away any team placing or points; non roster lifters shall receive individual awards and honors befitting their place in the weight class"

FAILED. Mostly because of the opposition from Trey Cunningham and other Louisiana Tech affiliated lifters. Apparently the voting members (very very few of whom have any vested in our meet, if any at all) had less objection to one or a couple of schools entering lifters whose performance serve no purpose other than to prevent other schools from gaining points than to say, making our national meet look like any other national level competition on the face of the earth. Let me make my positon clear: this is absurd! Any other sport would not allow lifters above the roster limit. Period. Does the home football team get to play with 15 on the field, just because those extra players are "eligible"? If any other sport allowed lifters not on the official roster, they would compete as unnattached, not be awarded points, and certainly those lifters would not affect the other teams.
Hard for me to argue with that group of people with no help from the audience.

Motion 2: "Meet director shall ensure that room rates are not adjusted above the regular rate offered by the hotel"

PASSED.

Motion 3: "Collegiate Committee recommends the meet director make every effort to acquire room rates not more than $90.00 per night."

FAILED.

Motion 4: "Upon being awarded a bid for Collegiate Nationals, meet director agrees to submit a breif report to the Collegiate Committee detailing progress towards meeting the specifications required to host Collegiate Nationals. Said reports to be made in 6-month increments from the date the bid is awarded. [the following portion removed by me]: Failure to meet bid specifications may result in the Committee retracting the meet awarded."

PASSED. I had to ammend the motion, remove the penalty clause because there are existing rules and proceedures in place where by the EC is the group that can pull meet bids.

Motion 5: "Each school is allowed to have one team and one team only to score at Collegiate Nationals."

PASSED. This was a no brainer.

Motion 6: "/Collegiate Nationals/ Meet director is recommended to donate the team entry fee at Collegiate Nationals directly to the Collegiate Committee, said money to be used for scholarship purposes."

FAILED. Apparently a recommendation is just too much to ask. No matter that the meet directors for 2005 and 2006 have committed to make a donation to this fund already. Don't think everyone there didn't get to hear that "the only scholarship set and ready to go is from the Women's Committee", which in fact was not moved on until after Wade Hooper and I started making turns to get ours started.

Collegiate lifters, and all within earshot: the NGB meeting is one of the few chances each year you get to witness the decisions that effect the entire organization. It is a chance to see up close and personal who runs our org. and watch the machinations of attempts at changes. Supposedly, all but three states have sitting State Chairmen. No way there were more than 10 in attendance. Granted, the meeting is in some respects a tiresome endeavor, but its your chance to hear the changes and attempts at changes being made in USAPL. Do not let another NGB meeting go by that you do not attend, or at the least insist your State Chairman attend also, or proxy to someone who can vote.
